On May 6th, 2009, at the Canadian Embassy in Beijing, China, Pegasus Pharmaceuticals Group Inc. jointly organized the “Sino-Canadian Symposium on Advanced Biomedical Technologies” with the Canadian Embassy in China and SinoBioway Group Co. Ltd. of Peking University, China. Over 50 high ranking guests participated in this symposium, including senior government officials, scientists from renowned universities and research institutes who are experts in the biomedical and botanical drug research.
Pegasus Pharmaceuticals Group Inc. (“Pegasus”), with its headquarter based in Vancouver, Canada, is a group of biotech and healthcare companies that specializes in research & development, manufacturing and commercialization of botanical drugs and natural health products as well as providing elite healthcare service. With more than two decades of research collaboration by Pegasus’ team of world-class scientists, Pegasus is a world leader in the botanical small-molecule drug development and peptide array technology.
SinoBioway Group Co. Ltd. is one of the largest biotech companies in China. It is founded in 1992 by the renowned Peking University. Currently SinoBioway Group Co. Ltd. has three bases: the Beijing Biocity, Xiamen BioPark and Guangzhou Liu xi wan BioPort, and over 10 subsidiaries in Beijing, Guangdong, Fujian, Hunan and Sichuan. With its close link to the Peking University, SinoBioway Group Co. Ltd’s research project applications will have easier access to government funding.
SinoBioway Group Co. Ltd. is very interested in the Peptide Array Technology platform of Pegasus Pharmaceuticals Group, which is a cutting edge technology in the proteomics research in the post-genomic era. This technology is widely recognized as a prospective approach in the research and development of novel vaccines, peptide drugs and diagnostic kits. Using the state-of-the-art technology of “Peptide Array Technology (Pep-Hit)”, Pegasus was the first in the world to map all the specific epitopes of SARS coronavirus which could be developed into diagnostic kits for SARS and SARS vaccines. Furthermore, this technology helps identify unique active peptides for inhibiting reverse transcriptase of HIV, carboxypeptidase R, multidrug resistance protein P-GP, complement C5a, tyrosinase, and binding to Tau protein to inhibit polymerization. These active peptides are promising candidates for novel drug development.
In early 2009, SinoBioway Group Co. Ltd. and Pegasus Pharmaceuticals Group Inc. (“Pegasus”) signed a strategic collaborative agreement to apply for a series of government funded research projects using the Peptide Array Technology platform of Pegasus. The Sino-Canadian Symposium is a collaborative effort by both companies. Dr. William Campbell was the keynote presenter on "High-throughput Peptide Array Technology and Its Applications". Dr. Campbell, a Senior Scientist in proteomics, is the Director of Technology for peptide drugs at Pegasus Pharmaceuticals Group, a Visiting Professor at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada and the former professor at Nagoya City University, Japan. Dr. William Jia, Chief Scientist, Pegasus Pharmaceuticals Group Inc., Professor of Molecular Virology and Cell Biology, University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada, was the other keynote speaker for the presentation on "Novel Botanical Small-molecule Drug Delivery Technology and Its Applications”. Both presentations had drawn immense interest from the scientists attending the symposium. The symposium plays an important role in promoting the information exchange of novel biomedical technologies between Canada and China.
